ALTIUS BROADBAND ANNOUNCES DEPLOYMENT OF WIMAX NETWORK IN BALTIMORE COUNTY
New VoIP Service Recently Added for Residential Customers
PHOENIX, MD (August 17, 2008) — ALTIUS Broadband, a Maryland-based provider of wireless broadband internet, today announced the deployment of a new WiMAX network providing High Speed Internet service for individuals and businesses in the Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Butler and Pikesville areas of Baltimore County.
WiMAX wireless technology provides digital communication for metropolitan areas with less interference and a larger broadband footprint. This fourth-generation protocol (4G) technology will become increasingly common in the next six to nine months nationwide. An estimated $100,000 in equipment was installed by ALTIUS on the tallest tower in the region, which is owned by Maryland Public Television. The base station equipment owned by ALTIUS will reach a radius of 10-15 miles.
"We selected this area in Baltimore County due to the success ALTIUS has had in the northern Baltimore County area as an Internet Service Provider," said Jim Connor, president of ALTIUS Broadband. "We do not have any capacity issues with the WiMAX network and expect to bring on 400-600 customers in the first six months. WiMAX technology works well for suburban communities where broadband service that is fast and portable is desired. Our customers can use our service at work, take it with them at lunch and stay connected and then even take their modem home at night if they live within the serviceable area."
ALTIUS partnered with the leaders in wireless technology including Cisco, Motorola and Redline Communications to make this network possible. Larger network operators such as Sprint, ATT and others are expected to announce their entrance into the WiMAX market place very shortly.
In addition to the new WiMAX network in the Owings Mills area of Baltimore County, ALTIUS has also launched a nationwide VoIP (voice over IP telephony system) service for $34.95 a month unlimited local and long-distance telephone service. An adapter is provided to customers to hook up to their existing telephone and use with any high-speed Internet connection. Customers may keep their current telephone number or select a new number.
